The idea that we cannot be guaranteed success keeps us from achieving a level of freedom that we will never know. Consider that the animals in a zoo become so conditioned by the constant stream of free food that their muscle atrophy and desire to know the outside world wanes. In a similar vane, is it possible that many of us get complacent due to the perceived comfort of what we know? Do we lack a level of risk-taking because we can’t see where we will land?
As Tony Robbins always said, “We will do more to avoid pain than gain pleasure.” Specifically, we’re immersed in a time where safety is the core issue. We are nervous about a lot of different things and, therefore, we seem to tread lightly when we don’t know someone. Yet, salespeople continue to cold call and knock on doors with a product-centric mentality.
We procrastinate for multiple reasons. First, we have become addicted to immediate gratification. That pacifies us from the harsh realities of change. Just as my kid would rather watch a video on his iPad than do his homework, we do the things we know best and rarely step outside of our comfort zone.
We want to avoid the pain of change, so we accept the short-lived pleasure of feeling competent. But over time our mental and emotional muscles atrophy and we can’t quite summon the courage to engage in something new. As a result, extreme caution gets in the way of success, while true growth comes from risk. All we need to do is take a leap… A leap of faith.
